Target recalls Up&Up baby wipes due to potential bacterial contamination

Target is taking precautionary measures by recalling certain Up & Up brand baby wipes due to possible contamination issues.

The affected products include Up & Up Fragrance Free Baby Wipes available in packages of 20, 72, 216, 800, and 1200 wipes, along with Up & Up Fresh Cucumber Scented Baby Wipes sold in 72, 216, and 800-count packages. These wipes were distributed through Target stores nationwide and also sold online through the company’s website.

In a statement released by the Food and Drug Administration on Friday, Target disclosed that they received reports of discoloration in the wipes. Upon FDA testing, samples revealed the presence of Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioli, bacteria that naturally occur but can cause health issues, especially in children.

Target emphasized in their announcement that these products are primarily used on newborns, infants, and young children, who are especially susceptible to infections due to their developing immune systems. They noted that while healthy individuals might experience only local infections from using the wipes, those with compromised immune systems, such as young children, face a risk of more severe conditions, including sepsis or pneumonia.

The recall notice also mentioned that both Target and the wipes manufacturer, Sapro Temizlik Urunleri, have encountered numerous consumer complaints and reports of adverse reactions, including skin and eye irritation and infections potentially linked to the product’s use.

ABC News has reached out to the manufacturer for further comments on the situation.

In a statement to ABC News, a Target spokesperson said, “We care deeply about the safety of our guests and our products. Out of an abundance of caution, Target has voluntarily recalled Up&Up Fragrance Free Baby Wipes and Up&Up Fresh Cucumber Baby Wipes. For additional information, including refunds and impacted product information, please view the release.”

Anyone with recalled wipes is being advised to stop using the products immediately. Customers can return them to any Target store for a full refund and can reach out to Target Guest Relations for more information at 1-800-440-0680 from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. CT daily.

A full list of recalled wipes, their item numbers, UPC numbers, manufacturing codes and expiration dates can be found in the FDA announcement.
