Fox News has confirmed that the suspect accused of fatally shooting a police K9 in California is a Salvadoran national residing in the U.S. illegally. This information comes from a source within Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Jose Domingo Ayala Alas, allegedly fled during a traffic stop on November 22, prompting a chase by Burbank police officers and their K9 partner, Spike, through a residential area.

Authorities report that Alas fired his weapon after being detected by Spike while hiding in some bushes, tragically hitting the police dog.

Despite being rushed to an emergency veterinary clinic, Spike succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

K9 Spike

The Burbank Police Department announced on November 23 that Spike, one of their K9 officers, was killed in the line of duty, as shared on their Facebook page.

Following the incident, additional K9 units, a SWAT team, and aerial support were deployed to the scene, ultimately leading to Alas’s capture while he was still armed.

While multiple efforts were made to negotiate with him, Alas continued shooting at police officers, officials said.

Officers from multiple law enforcement agencies returned fire, killing Alas.

A memorial ceremony is scheduled Wednesday for Spike, who will also be honored at the city’s Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year’s Day.

Flowers, stuffed animals and other mementos were collected and placed on display by the community.

“We want to extend our deepest gratitude to our community,” Burbank Police Chief Rafael Quintero wrote in a statement on social media. “Your outpouring of love, compassion, and support as we mourn the loss of K9 Spike has meant more to us than words can express.

“A heartfelt thank you to the men and women of the Burbank PD—your strength, dedication, and commitment to holding the line, especially in moments of grief, embody the true spirit of service. … We are grateful to K9 Spike, who paid the ultimate sacrifice and ensured the men and women of Burbank PD returned home safe that night.”
