All 9 bodies of missing skiers in deadly California avalanche have been recovered, authorities say

The tragic story of nine backcountry skiers who lost their lives in an avalanche near Truckee, California, has reached a sorrowful conclusion. Authorities confirmed on Saturday that all the bodies have been recovered from the site of the devastating event that occurred four days prior, amidst challenging weather conditions that severely hampered search efforts.

Rescue teams were finally able to reach the remains of eight victims on Castle Peak, located near Lake Tahoe. Additionally, they discovered the ninth skier, who had been missing and presumed dead since the avalanche struck on Tuesday. This individual was found in close proximity to the others, but adverse weather conditions, including white-out snow, had hindered earlier detection.

Operations to retrieve the victims had been temporarily halted due to the relentless snowfall and continued threat of further avalanches in the area. Crews had to wait until conditions improved to safely resume their mission.

On Saturday morning, the recovery operation was successfully executed with the aid of helicopters from the California National Guard and California Highway Patrol. These aircraft hoisted the bodies from the treacherous mountain terrain, transferring them to snowcats—specialized vehicles designed for navigating snowy landscapes.

In an effort to lessen the danger to rescue personnel, officials had been employing avalanche mitigation techniques, including using water to destabilize and release the snowpack deliberately. This proactive approach aimed to minimize the risk of additional avalanches during the recovery operations.

The comprehensive search and mitigation efforts involved several agencies, including the California Highway Patrol air operations, Nevada County Sheriff’s search and rescue teams, Tahoe Nordic search and rescue, Pacific Gas & Electric, and the Sierra Avalanche Center, among others. Their coordinated response highlights the dedication and collaboration required in such perilous and tragic circumstances.
