In a significant development, Mexican authorities have detained the partner of an Indiana woman whose disappearance alongside her seven children had left communities on edge. Prosecutors confirmed on Monday that the suspect is linked to the tragic death of the mother, who vanished months prior.
The victim, identified as 30-year-old Makala Pendley from Indianapolis, was discovered in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas. Her body was found near the municipality of Zinacantán, and family members revealed that Pendley was six months pregnant when she went missing, adding another tragic layer to the case.
During a Facebook Live session, Chiapas State Prosecutor Jorge Luis Llaven Abarca shared the news of an arrest. The individual, referred to as Joseph “N,” is Pendley’s partner and has been named the primary suspect in the investigation, marking a crucial step in the pursuit of justice.
“In the coming hours, we will determine the extent of his criminal responsibility,” Llaven Abarca stated, emphasizing that authorities would pursue the maximum penalty of 100 years for the crime of femicide, reflecting the severity and gravity of the charges.
A poignant image of Makala Pendley with her children, shared on a crowdfunding platform, underscores the personal loss behind the headlines. Authorities have confirmed that Pendley’s seven children are safe and under government protection. Efforts are underway to reunite them with their family in coordination with the U.S. Embassy, ensuring the children’s well-being as they recover from this ordeal.
