MAPLE PARK, Ill. (WLS) — Authorities have released the identity of the individual who was fatally shot during a police pursuit in the far western suburbs on Monday afternoon.

The Illinois State Police reported that the incident unfolded on westbound Interstate 88, near the Maple Park area, shortly before 3:15 p.m. on Monday.

According to the police, a Naperville officer initially identified a Honda vehicle linked to a missing person case involving an individual undergoing a mental health crisis. The sighting occurred near IL-59 and North Aurora Road.

The driver of the Honda reportedly displayed a firearm and fled the scene. Warrenville police officers later spotted the vehicle and engaged in pursuit, as the suspect continued to brandish the weapon, the Illinois State Police stated.

The chase extended into the westbound lanes of I-88, prompting the Illinois State Police to join the pursuit. As the vehicle entered DeKalb County, officers deployed spike strips, effectively stopping the car near Keslinger Road.

In the ensuing confrontation, both the driver and a Warrenville police officer exchanged gunfire. The driver sustained injuries and, despite efforts by officers to administer aid, was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, according to the Illinois State Police.

The DeKalb County Coroner’s Office on Tuesday identified the driver as 36-year-old Joseph Moreno, of Warrenville.

No officers were injured.

Chopper 7 was over the scene around 4:15 p.m. Monday and managed to get a shot of what appears to be a gun laying on the road next to the Honda.

ABC7 cameras also captured the Honda’s broken passenger side window, and a Warrenville police car was towed away from the scene.

All westbound lanes were shut down for several hours but reopened around 7:30 p.m. Monday

The coroner’s office and ISP are investigating.

ISP Division of Internal Investigation special agents are investigating ISP’s involvement in the incident.

The ISP Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 1 is investigating the Warrenville police officer’s use of force.
