One of the three people who lost their lives in the Saturday night mass shooting at a well-known North Carolina waterfront restaurant has been named as Joy Rogers. She was a recently retired mother of three who had just relocated to Southport after rearing her children in California.
Her husband, Lennie Rogers, confirmed to WECT News that Joy was among those killed at the American Fish Company.
“Joy was a dedicated wife and a loving mother to our three children,” her husband, Lennie Rogers, stated in a release to WECT News. “Originally from California, our family moved to Southport just a year ago to enjoy our retirement. In that brief time, she made a remarkable impact on those around her in the community.”
“Her love for Jesus was profound, and from that stemmed her love for others. Joy truly embodied her name—her presence was full of joy, light, and kindness. She possessed an incredible talent for making people feel noticed and welcomed. Joy was a vibrant part of both her community and her family, and her absence will be deeply felt.”

A judge has denied bail, expressing concerns of the individual being both a flight risk and a threat to the community. The suspect, Edge, will be returning to court on October 13 for a probable cause hearing and has requested a public defender.
During the court session, prosecutors mentioned that Edge used a .300 Blackout Sig Sauer rifle equipped with a suppressor and scope, and was also carrying a .380 handgun in his waistband at the time of his arrest. Authorities highlighted that some of the rifle ammunition was designed for increased ballistic impact.
Two deputies responded on a sheriff’s department boat after the shooting, later spotting Edge as he walked to retrieve his boat trailer. Deputies moved in and apprehended him as he backed the trailer in to pull his vessel from the water.
The 40-year-old suspect is charged with three counts of first-degree murder, five counts of attempted first-degree murder and five counts of assault with a deadly weapon. He could face additional charges, including the death penalty.
