2 arrested after shooting outside funeral for toddler, police chase in North Carolina

A 24-year-old man reportedly discharged a firearm outside a funeral home and subsequently fled in a car that later collided with a residence, according to law enforcement officials.

In Burlington, North Carolina, authorities stated that a shooting incident occurred on Saturday afternoon. This followed a dispute that erupted during a memorial service for a young child. The Burlington Police Department detailed that they were summoned to the funeral home at approximately 2:15 p.m. after receiving reports of a confrontation that transpired post-funeral for a two-year-old who had recently passed away. Police identified the shooter as Trevonte Jaquan McGhee, who allegedly exited the premises and fired several shots with a rifle.

Following the gunfire, McGhee entered a vehicle and departed the scene. Officers located the vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver, identified as 24-year-old Cazari Monique Russell, did not comply. During the ensuing pursuit, McGhee reportedly discarded the rifle from the car. The chase concluded a short distance away when Russell lost control and crashed into a house.

Russell was apprehended at the crash site, while McGhee initially fled on foot but was subsequently captured, as reported by the police. The authorities recovered the discarded rifle.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and officials have assured that there is no lingering threat to public safety.

No injuries were reported. Police said there is no ongoing threat to the community.

McGhee faces charges of possession of a firearm by a felon, going armed to the terror of the people, discharging a firearm within city limits, disorderly conduct at a funeral home and leaving the scene of a crash as a passenger.

Russell is charged with going armed to the terror of the people, misdemeanor conspiracy, reckless driving and failure to stop at a stop sign or flashing red light.

Both were being processed at the Alamance County Jail on Saturday. No bond information was available. The investigation is ongoing.
