DOJ sues UCLA over alleged failure to protect Jewish, Israeli students
The Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against UCLA, accusing the institution of failing to address discrimination and violence against Jewish and Israeli students during a protest in 2024. During this protest, certain agitators allegedly assaulted and pepper-sprayed students. Human rights attorney Brooke Goldstein highlights how antisemitism is becoming a politicized issue.
In a separate incident, a man carrying zip ties and duct tape has been charged after allegedly attacking five women on the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) campus in under an hour last week.
According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, 29-year-old Olumuyiwa Akindahunsi is accused of sexually assaulting two women and attempting to assault a third at UCLA. He is also alleged to have physically attacked two additional women, four of whom are UCLA students.
Akindahunsi, who is not affiliated with the university, faces several serious charges. These include one felony count of attempted kidnapping with the intent to commit forcible rape, three felony counts of assault with intent to commit forcible rape during a first-degree burglary, and two felony counts of assault likely to cause significant injury.
“These alarming incidents threaten the very essence of campus safety, leaving five victims traumatized and disturbing the peace of campus life,” stated Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman. “We are collaborating closely with the UCLA Police Department to ensure the suspect is brought to justice and fully held accountable for his actions.”
