Unsecured metal pipes impale California sedan in terrifying highway crash

A Southern California driver survived a frightening highway crash Thursday after a load of unsecured metal pipes flew off a nearby pickup truck and punched through the rear of the driver’s sedan.

The crash happened on an Orange County highway, where a white pickup carrying the pipes was involved in a collision with a gray sedan, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Santa Ana Area Office.

CHP Santa Ana said investigators determined that the pickup, which was loaded with metal piping, struck the gray sedan during the two-vehicle crash.

Following the impact, authorities said, the pipes were thrown forward from the pickup and speared into the sedan, breaking through its rear windshield.

Images shared by the agency show at least six long metal pipes lodged inside the damaged sedan, with the sharp cargo appearing to have missed the driver’s seat by a dangerously small margin.

Despite the severity of the Orange County crash, officials said the sedan’s driver was fortunate to suffer only minor injuries.

CHP used the incident as a warning to motorists about the dangers of unsecured cargo, noting that road debris contributes to hundreds of deaths nationwide each year.

“Unsecured cargo causes crashes every year, leading to hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries nationwide,” the agency said. “When a load isn’t properly secured, everyone on the road is at risk.”

The agency reminded drivers to properly secure all cargo before hitting the road, using equipment such as ropes, netting, bungee cords or straps. Officials also advised motorists to use sturdy tarps or covers to prevent debris from falling out and to avoid overloading vehicles.

According to data released last year by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, road debris was a contributing factor in roughly 53,000 crashes annually between 2018 and 2023. Those crashes resulted in an average of about 5,500 injuries and 72 deaths each year.
