Senate holds rare Saturday session aimed at ending shutdown

Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina and a staunch supporter of President Trump, has endorsed the president’s recent call to revamp the Affordable Care Act (ACA). This announcement came via a Truth Social post made by Trump on Saturday. Graham emphasized that Republicans are against extending the health care tax credits associated with the ACA.

“We have no intention of prolonging this program for another year, as it would be a disservice to taxpayers,” Graham declared on the Senate floor. “The current health care system is failing, and continuing it would only benefit health insurance companies. Our goal is to introduce a more effective system that genuinely benefits consumers by reducing health care costs.”

Senator Graham stressed that instilling fear among the public won’t compel Republicans to support what he described as a flawed health care law. However, he mentioned that both Republicans and the president are open to discussions with Democrats about achieving better value and reducing premiums.

“The fundamental principles of Obamacare need to be altered,” Graham asserted.

He praised President Trump for actively engaging with the issue, stating, “The president has provided a clear direction. I plan to follow his guidance and suggestions.”

Graham also mentioned that he had a conversation with President Trump earlier that morning. He noted that Trump expressed interest in collaborating to find a more effective solution to the health care dilemma.

“I know we can, but we’re not going to do it while the government’s shut down,” he said.

Graham urged Democrats to “end this madness.”

“To my Democratic colleagues, let’s open up the government and act like adults and see if we can get this problem in a better spot,” he said. “We’ll never do it with the government shut down.”
