Victims Identified in Deadly Amazon Cargo Jet Crash in Miami

Miami authorities have named the five people who died after an Amazon cargo plane ran off a runway while landing at Miami International Airport on Sunday, struck vehicles and burst into flames.

Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz announced the victims’ identities during a news conference Tuesday.

The victims were Rolando Aleman Leon, 55; Yoel Rodriguez Naranjo, 53; Julio C. Pineda, 75; Carlos Acosta Fajardo, 53; and Javierkys Reyes Quevedo, 47.

Five other people were hurt in the crash. Three remained hospitalized, including two in critical condition, while the two pilots were treated and released, the sheriff said.

Amazon Air Flight 7598 had departed San Juan, Puerto Rico, and was making its third flight of the day when it attempted to land at the Miami airport.

The aircraft traveled at least 1,300 feet beyond the paved runway surface before hitting multiple vehicles, including a 2012 white Ford Econoline van carrying passengers, National Transportation Safety Board Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy said at a Monday news conference.

The aircraft then crashed through the airport perimeter and struck a civilian vehicle, a Toyota Corolla Cross LE.

The plane then “continued into the grass and impacted another fence line, which separated an area where Tesla robotaxis were stationed,” Homendy said.

All the victims were inside the vehicles, she said.

Homicide detectives with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office are investigating the deaths, Cordero-Stutz said.
