San Francisco — better known in some circles for corporate fleece vests, practical footwear and tech-office uniforms than couture — is getting a major fashion spotlight: Vogue has named the city as the host of next year’s Vogue World event.
“Vogue believes in celebrating cities, and San Francisco is a city like none other,” Anna Wintour, Condé Nast’s chief content officer and the global editorial director of Vogue, said in a statement.
“It’s a place of diverse communities living side by side, a place that loves the arts, loves creativity, and isn’t afraid of change.”
The choice gives an unexpected turn to a city once labeled the “land that style forgot” by celebrated fashion writer Guy Trebay, and long associated by critics with Rockports, tech company T-shirts, “dress sweatpants” and layers built for the fog.
Vogue World has previously staged editions in fashion powerhouses including New York, London and Milan, making San Francisco’s selection a notable addition to the event’s global roster and its first stateside conference in years.
“I love that San Francisco has always stood up for its values, and the things it believes in. We think it’s the perfect setting for Vogue World 2027,” Wintour added.
The announcement follows “Vogue World: Hollywood,” a 2025 event at the Paramount lot in Los Angeles that drew a star-packed lineup including Doja Cat, Gracie Abrams, Nicole Kidman, Kendall Jenner and others.
Mayor Daniel Lurie welcomed the news, framing Vogue World’s arrival as another signal that San Francisco is rebounding after years marked by decline.
“Creativity and free expression have been the engine of San Francisco for generations, and that spirit will be on full display at Vogue World 2027,” Lurie said in a statement.
