PETERSBURG, Va. () — Five people were wounded, including one who was critically injured, after gunfire erupted at Virginia State University early Saturday, prompting officials to briefly lock down the campus.
According to the VSU Office of Communications and University, the shooting occurred near the VSU Quad Annexes along Boisseau Street. Officers were called around 1:30 a.m. local time to the 3300 block of Boisseau Street, where they located five shooting victims outside university residence halls.
All five victims were taken to area hospitals. Chesterfield County police said one person was listed in critical condition, the university reported, while the other four were treated for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Virginia State University alerted the public on social media shortly before 5 a.m., saying the campus had been placed on lockdown after a shooting involving “multiple suspects.” Officials later lifted the lockdown and said regular access to campus could resume.
Investigators have not yet released details about what may have sparked the violence.
A large law enforcement presence remained at Virginia State University as authorities continued investigating the campus shooting. Chesterfield County Police are heading the case, with support from Virginia State University Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.
