New Jersey beaver attack: 8-year-old boy injured by animal at park in Mahwah, NJ

In a concerning incident that unfolded in Mahwah, New Jersey, an 8-year-old boy suffered injuries after being attacked by a beaver at a local park. The unsettling encounter occurred on Sunday evening, around 6 p.m., while the child was enjoying a fishing outing along the park’s shoreline.

According to police reports, the beaver emerged unexpectedly from the water, charging at the young boy. In his attempt to flee, the child stumbled, allowing the beaver to bite him on the upper thigh. The attack continued until a nearby family acquaintance intervened, bravely confronting the aggressive animal. He managed to fend off the beaver by hitting and kicking it, causing the creature to retreat temporarily.

Despite the intervention, the beaver remained in the vicinity, circling the area ominously after the attack. Responding swiftly, Mahwah EMS arrived at the scene and transported the injured boy to a hospital. However, at the time of reporting, details regarding his condition were not immediately available.

The incident has sparked wider concern as police investigations revealed additional reports, supported by online video evidence, suggesting that the same beaver may have approached or even attacked other park visitors earlier in the day. The park community remains on alert as authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.

Mahwah EMS responded to the scene and took the child to a hospital. There was no immediate word on his condition.

While investigating, police said they received additional reports, along with an online video, indicating the same animal may have approached or attacked other park visitors earlier in the day.

Due to the circumstances, Mahwah police contacted animal control. Responders from Tyco Animal Control arrived and observed the beaver showing signs of possible illness, officials said.

The animal was captured and removed from the park and will be sent for testing.

Authorities have not released further details as the investigation continues.
