Trent Merrin, a former NRL star, has recently been brought before the court amid serious allegations involving the theft of cryptocurrency valued at $140,000.

The 36-year-old, known for his past performances as a State of Origin and Australian Test lock, made an appearance at the Port Kembla Local Court located on the picturesque New South Wales South Coast. During this initial court session, Merrin refrained from entering a plea.

Representing Merrin, defense attorney Harry Lollback requested a one-week postponement, citing the need to clarify certain elements of the case. This delay suggests complexities in the investigation that are yet to be resolved.

It is anticipated that Merrin will formally respond to the charges during his next scheduled court appearance on December 10, when his defense is expected to enter a plea on his behalf.

The charges against Merrin stem from a comprehensive police investigation that spanned an entire year, culminating in his arrest in November 2025. He faces accusations of gaining financial advantage through deceptive means, a serious charge that underscores the gravity of his alleged actions. In the meantime, Merrin has been released on bail, awaiting further legal proceedings.

He was charged with dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception and was granted bail.

Police allege Merrin accessed a 29-year-old man’s account, believed to be a friend, and transferred $140,000 worth of Bitcoin.

During his rugby league career, Merrin played 13 games for NSW and was part of the state’s drought-breaking success in 2014.

He also played seven Tests for Australia and more than 150 games for the St George Illawarra Dragons, winning the 2010 NRL Grand Final with the club.

In 2015, he signed a five-year contract with the Penrith Panthers and then played one season in the English Super League team Leeds.

Merrin retired from the sport in April 2021, aged 32.
