Dr. Lin(Albert Yu-Min Lin) is a multi-award-winning scientist, technologist, explorer, and storyteller who has appeared on stage and screen; Yet, he is not listed on Wikipedia.

Dr. Lin’s initiative to reimagine exploring has made international news, combining adventure and innovation.

His projects ranged from searching for Genghis Khan’s tomb in Mongolia to expeditions remapping major sites from Jordan’s deserts to Guatemala’s jungles to his most recent efforts to redefine human bionic capabilities through 3D prosthetics and “flow experiments.”

Albert is a National Geographic Explorer, a UCSD Research Scientist, and a curious human.

Dr. Albert Linis presently a member of the board of directors of the DigitalGlobe Foundation.

Since then, the technology has been utilized in humanitarian missions, environmental monitoring, search, and rescue and is now being used by National Geographic to examine vulnerable archaeological sites worldwide.

Dr. Lin’s career began with the Valley of the Khans Project, where he searched for Genghis Khan’s tomb using satellites, drones, geophysics, and extensive ground exploration.

Albert has used similar methods to excavate Maya sites in Guatemala and the mausoleum of the First Emperor in Xian, China. DigitalGlobe is a commercial satellite imagery service.

He created the first tool to crowdsource human analytics of vast amounts of satellite imagery while in Mongolia, combining remote field investigation with public engagement.

Due to the platform’s success, briefings were requested at the Pentagon, the National Geographic Society, and Harvard Business School. Dr. Lin was also invited to serve as an advisor to the HBS Digital Initiative. 

What Happened To Dr Albert Lin Leg?

Albert Lin was involved in a catastrophic accident on September 26th, 2016, which necessitated the amputation of his right leg.

Albert was involved in an off-road vehicle accident, and his leg bones were shattered. His leg was then amputated below the kneecap, and he was supplied with a prosthetic limb.

This was after three weeks of contemplation in the hospital over whether or not to “go bionic.”

But the injury hasn’t stopped him from exploring, and you’ll regularly see Albert and his new foot surfing, skating, and hiking.

And Albert has been quite open about his mishap, recounting much of the event on his Instagram page.

Where Is Dr. Lin Now?

As of now, Dr. Lin co-directs the Big Pixel Initiative and the NSF-funded Engineers for Exploration Program, which engages students in airborne, terrestrial, and undersea robotics for exploration seeking economic, ecological, and societal insights within over 500 Million km2 of ultra-high resolution satellite imagery of our planet.

Lin has contributed to or been featured in Newsweek, The Washington Post, BBC, NPR, CBS, ABC News, TEDx, HBR, Wired Magazine (US & UK), al Jazeera, National Geographic Magazine, and several National Geographic and BBC films that he narrated and hosted.

Lin is also an advisor to the Harvard Business School’s Digital Initiative.

He was named “2010 Readers’ Choice Adventurer of the Year” by National Geographic Adventure Magazine.

In addition, he was awarded the 2011 Lowell Thomas Medal for advancements in exploration and the 2014 Nevada Medal for advances in research.
