The popularity of “Don’t You Want Me” is widely seen as the commencement of the MTV-driven Second British Invasion of the United States (second British Invasion). Other worldwide successes include “Love Action,” “Open Your Heart,” “Mirror Man,” “Fascination,” “The Lebanon,” “Human” (which reached No. 1 in the United States), and “Tell Me When,” among others. Philip Oakey, the band’s singer and composer, has been the sole consistent member since 1977. 

Original members of The Human League were avant-garde all-male synthesizer-based musicians, but under Oakey’s direction, the group developed into a commercially successful synthpop act. Since 1987, the band has basically been a trio consisting of Oakey, long-time female singers Joanne Catherall and Susan Ann Sulley (both of whom joined the group in 1980), and a variety of sidemen, with a few exceptions. The Human League have produced nine studio albums, four EPs, 30 singles, and a number of compilation albums since their inception in 1978. With five albums and eight singles reaching the Top 10 in the United Kingdom, they have sold more than 20 million records worldwide.
