The 2026 golf season has reached its next phase as the year’s third major returns to Shinnecock Hills. The USGA brought a loaded 156-player field to Southampton, New York, with nearly every top name in the sport chasing the U.S. Open title over 72 holes. Now, with the cut complete, the field has been trimmed in half heading into the weekend’s final two rounds.
Though it is not the most frequent U.S. Open venue, Shinnecock Hills is widely regarded as one of the sternest examinations in championship golf. The famed course is hosting the major for the sixth time, and it has already produced a marquee leaderboard, with Wyndham Clark taking a notable four-shot advantage into the weekend.
Several contenders are still in position to make a charge, including Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa, both of whom finished their second rounds in strong fashion Friday morning to apply some pressure to Clark. Schauffele posted a 66 and birdied two of his final three holes, while Morikawa also surged late with three birdies on the back nine.
Scottie Scheffler began the week as the clear betting favorite, but his odds have drifted to 12-1. He remains fourth on the board, though that standing appears to reflect respect for his talent as much as his position, given that he trails Clark by seven shots. Rory McIlroy, trying to solve a course that troubled him in its last U.S. Open appearance eight years ago, sits alongside Scheffler on the leaderboard but is listed deeper at 18-1.
Being on site at the U.S. Open offers a special experience, but even from afar, watching one of golf’s biggest events unfold is a highlight of the sporting calendar. CBS Sports says it will deliver extensive coverage from Shinnecock Hills throughout the week.
With the weekend now underway, fans have plenty of ways to follow the action. Here is how to watch as much of the U.S. Open as possible, and be sure to stay with CBS Sports for live coverage throughout the third major of the season.
