Tuesday turned into a showcase for pitching at the 2026 College World Series, especially for No. 3 Georgia and No. 16 West Virginia. In separate elimination games, both clubs delivered shutout performances to stay alive and secure places in the Bracket 1 and Bracket 2 championship rounds.
Georgia’s staff once again stifled the usually potent lineup of No. 6 Texas, marking the second time in Omaha that the Bulldogs have kept the Longhorns in check. Dylan Vigue set the tone with eight strikeouts over four innings, while Justin Byrd closed it out with four more over five innings of relief in a 2-0 win. Through two CWS matchups against Texas, Georgia has surrendered only one run since arriving in Omaha last weekend.
That dominant effort gives Georgia momentum heading into a Bracket 2 championship rematch with Oklahoma. Just as important, the Bulldogs got through the game using only two pitchers, leaving the bullpen in strong shape as they try to pull off the difficult task of winning twice in two days to reach the College World Series finals.
West Virginia matched that level of dominance earlier Tuesday in its own win-or-go-home game against Troy. Dawson Montesa led the way with 5.1 innings of two-hit baseball, helping power the Mountaineers to a 12-0 blowout over the Trojans. The offense backed him in emphatic fashion. Nearly every starter collected at least one hit, but standout catcher/second baseman Gavin Kelly made the biggest impact. His 18th homer of the season, a three-run blast in the sixth inning, put the game out of reach.
Next up, West Virginia will meet No. 5 North Carolina with Bracket 1 on the line. Like Georgia, the Mountaineers must string together back-to-back victories to punch their ticket to the championship series.
