Travis Kelce’s first NFL game as a married man began with an awkward moment involving a fan at Arrowhead Stadium.
As his new wife, Taylor Swift, and his mother, Donna, visited with actor Tom Cruise in a VIP suite, Kelce took part in pregame warmups on the field ahead of the Kansas City Chiefs’ Week 1 matchup with the visiting Denver Broncos.
Kelce was not wearing pads during warmups, but he did have gloves on while catching passes before heading to the locker room to change. He later removed the gloves while walking toward the locker-room tunnel, setting up an uncomfortable exchange.
Still holding the crumpled gloves, Kelce reached toward several Chiefs fans in the front row for fist bumps. One fan apparently believed the tight end was offering him a glove as a souvenir and reached for it. Kelce, a 14-year NFL veteran, appeared to swipe at the fan’s hand in response.
The interaction ended there, but a video of the moment quickly spread online before later being deleted.
Many viewers appeared to believe the incident was simply a misunderstanding.

“Think he thought he was handing him it lmao,” one user posted on X.
“I mean it kind of looks like he was about to give it to someone or he just wasn’t paying attention to where his hand was, but dude still shouldn’t have tried to reach for it,” another user wrote.
Others, however, viewed the exchange as evidence of what they considered a deeper character issue.
“Most unlikeable dude in the league,” one critic wrote.
Far more fans came to Kelce’s defense. “Disrespectful rat needs to leave Travis alone lmao,” one supporter posted on X.
Kelce still had his gloves when he put on his pads for the first half, although he had little opportunity to use them. Returning from the season-ending knee surgery he suffered in 2025, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes targeted Kelce only twice before halftime. Kelce entered the locker room with one catch for six yards.
Kelce made a bigger impact in the third quarter, catching a short pass from Mahomes and powering 53 yards downfield before being tackled at Denver’s 4-yard line. The reception moved him past Dallas Cowboys legend Jason Witten and into second place among tight ends in career receiving yards.
Now Kelce trails only Tony Gonzalez, the legendary Chiefs tight end.
Meanwhile, back in the VIP suite, Swift was chatting it up with Cruise. The songstress, 36, who married Kelce, also 36, at Madison Square Garden on July 3, was spotted in her usual seat in the tight end’s luxury suite at Arrowhead Stadium.

Following the Chiefs’ second touchdown of the evening, Swift, who sported Kansas City’s colors in a red-and-white checked dress, was seen high-fiving the actor and embracing him in celebration.
The Opalite singer was also accompanied by a full entourage of friends and family. Her dad, Scott, sat on her other side, dressed in a bright red Chiefs sweater, despite his Philadelphia Eagles fandom.
Kelce’s mom, Donna, was also captured in the suite, which was brimming with members of the NFL star’s inner circle.
While Cruise appears to have no ties to the Chiefs or any particular NFL team as a fan, he does have a few cinematic connections to football.
Not only did he play the title role in Jerry Maguire as a lovestruck agent based on the legendary Leigh Steinberg, but a much younger Cruise starred in All the Right Moves in 1983 as a high school football star in a dying Pennsylvania steel town.
Meanwhile, Swift’s attendance at the Chiefs season opener had been cast in doubt with the 2026 Emmys also taking place on Monday evening.
It proved to be a good decision as Kansas City cruised to a 31-10 Week 1 win as Kelce finished with 71 receiving yards on three catches.
The Chiefs will host the Indianapolis Colts in Week 2.
