Ex-NBA star Lamar Odom plans to plead no-contest in DUI case

LAS VEGAS — Former NBA standout Lamar Odom is expected to resolve a Las Vegas DUI case through a plea agreement, his defense attorney said.

Odom, 46, was arrested on Jan. 17 and later faced charges of driving under the influence, speeding and failing to maintain his lane. He entered a not guilty plea in March.

His attorney, Michael Becker, said Odom intends to plead no contest under a deal that would reduce the original DUI count to reckless driving. By entering a no-contest plea, Odom would agree to the terms set by the Clark County District Attorney’s Office while not admitting guilt.

A bench trial had been set for Tuesday in Las Vegas Justice Court, but the proceeding was postponed so Odom can enter his plea later this month. Becker said Odom is not expected to appear in court personally.

The Clark County District Attorney’s Office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

According to the arrest report, a Nevada State Police Highway Patrol trooper spotted Odom driving above the speed limit on a Las Vegas highway and changing lanes without signaling on Jan. 17. After the traffic stop, the trooper reported that Odom’s eyes appeared bloodshot and that there was an odor of marijuana.

Odom told the trooper he had not consumed alcohol and said a passenger had been smoking marijuana, the report states. The trooper described Odom’s performance on field sobriety tests as “unsatisfactory,” noting that he failed to touch the tip of his nose with his finger and lost his balance.

Odom was part of the Los Angeles Lakers’ championship teams in 2009 and 2010. Over his 14-season NBA career, he also suited up for the LA Clippers, Miami Heat and Dallas Mavericks.

His 2013 marriage to reality TV star Khloe Kardashian was tabloid fodder, and the couple’s wedding was showcased on “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.” They divorced months later. That same year, Odom was arrested for a DUI in Los Angeles. He later pleaded no contest and received three years of probation.

In 2015, Odom made headlines after suffering a medical episode during a stay at a legal brothel in Nevada called Love Ranch. In the arrest report, Odom allegedly told the trooper that he had 12 strokes and six heart attacks and was “poisoned at the brothel in Pahrump.”
