Jurgen Klopp’s injury crisis worsened on Friday after Alisson was ruled out of their upcoming clash against Brentford.

The Brazilian goalkeeper had just recovered from a bout of flu, and had returned to first-team training, but picked up an injury on Friday afternoon.

There is speculation that it could be a hamstring injury but Mail Sport understands that Alisson has remained on Merseyside for further investigations.

Caoimhin Kelleher, who had stepped up in between the sticks last weekend, is now set to start on Saturday as Liverpool travel to the G-Tech Community Stadium.

The 31-year-old had already missed three games earlier this season with a hamstring problem, but it spells a concerning look for Klopp, who now has eight players sidelined with injuries.

The Reds will also be without Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dominik Szoboszlai for Saturday’s match, with Klopp expressing doubts that both will be able to return in time for their upcoming EFL Cup final against Chelsea on February 25.

With Liverpool set to also take on Luton next Wednesday too, Klopp said: ‘It’s a super-intense period.

‘People think about the final, which is absolutely fine, but before the final we have Brentford and Luton and I didn’t think for a second about the final yet. “He can’t play the final?!” Yes, that’s one game but we have before then there are two games, which is as bad that they cannot play.

‘I think with Dom [Szoboszlai] it will be around that time, we will see how it exactly works. And with Trent, a week or two longer. It is not great but it was not to avoid, actually, that it happened.

‘I would say, I’m not sure Dom has a chance for the final but maybe, and Trent will probably be after.’

Klopp insisted that Alexander-Arnold had not been rushed back too early after the defender was forced off at half-time during Saturday’s game against Burnley with a recurring knee issue.

‘I have to clarify a bit. As long as I am here, we never forced anyone back and never will do,’ said Klopp.

‘Every scenario is different. Some players are fit after three days, and another guy after four weeks.’

Speaking on the injury itself, he added: ‘It’s very unlucky and unfortunate, absolutely. I had it a couple of times in my time as a manager, not only here. It can happen, it’s not great but nothing else. It says nothing about the quality of anybody; the world we are living in [people may say], “The medical department… I am not sure about that…” It has nothing to do with that.

‘We have to bring the boys back as soon as possible but never sooner than they are ready, from our point of view.’

Liverpool are also without Thiago Alcantara, Ben Doak, and Joel Matip, who suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury during Liverpool’s 4-3 win against Fulham in December.
