Marcelo has revealed his intriguing post-retirement plans just five days after calling it quits on his illustrious 20-year-long football career.

The 36-year-old had one of the most trophy-filled careers in history thanks to his time at Real Madrid from 2007-22 and his return to boyhood Brazilian club Fluminense in 2023.

His trophy cabinet is one that even some of the all-time legends of the game would be jealous of, proving a vital component of the all-conquering Madrid side of the 2010s.

Specifically, he wishes to get into art, music and ‘make movies’ with his wife.

‘I did everything I had to do in football, thank God I didn’t have any serious injuries, I played in the best team in the world and had the best teammates,’ Marcelo told El Hormiguero.

‘I won some things, but there comes a time when you need new challenges; I’m not tired of football, but I wanted to do other different things too.

‘I always played football with joy and not with responsibility. I always saw it as something to have fun, but there comes a time when you have to live.

‘I took very good care of myself as a professional. It’s difficult when the time comes to decide that you’re not going to play football anymore. The first one to know was my wife. I needed more time with my family.’

Marcelo also noted that he wishes to swap his football boots for the microphone, revealing that he has had a long-lasting passion for singing.

‘I’m going to take them [my kids] to school, hang out more with my wife. Now I have more time to sit in an office, read and send emails. I want to get into art, music, make movies with my wife.

‘I’ve loved music since I was little. I know some singers and I would really like to produce a song for them, make a beat. It would be a dream for me.’

In 2008, Marcelo married his long-term girlfriend, Clarice Alves. A year later, they had their first child, Enzo Alves Vieira, who now plays as a forward for Madrid’s youth team.

Their second son, Liam, was born six years later on September 1 2015.

Marcelo joined Madrid as a teenager, and after lifting the Champions League five times, and the Spanish league six times, left an icon in 2022.

In total, the Brazilian racked up 546 games for Los Blancos, scoring 38 goals and providing an impressive 103 assists.

After a brief spell with Olympiacos in Greece, Marcelo moved to Fluminense – where he started his career – and won the Copa Libertadores.

He left the club in November, agreeing a mutual termination with Fluminense, after falling out with manager Mano Menezes.

Marcelo played for Brazil at the World Cup in 2014 and 2018, and won Olympic medals in 2008 (bronze) and 2012 (silver).

With 28 titles at senior level for club and country, Marcelo departed the game as one of the most decorated players ever.
