Thunder vs. Spurs odds, prediction: Game 1 pick as Western Conference Finals get started

The moment basketball enthusiasts have eagerly awaited has finally arrived. The Western Conference Finals are here, marking the beginning of what is expected to be a legendary rivalry in the NBA. This anticipated clash stems from the San Antonio Spurs’ decisive victories over the Oklahoma City Thunder back in December, setting the stage for a competition that could define this era of basketball. Despite the unpredictable nature of the league, both teams sailed through the initial rounds with ease, becoming the first pair of 62-win teams to meet in a playoff series since the 1998 NBA Finals.

As the series kicks off, it promises to be the most talked-about playoff encounter in recent years. Victor Wembanyama is on the cusp of his debut NBA Finals appearance in just his third season, while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is not only defending his championship title but also his reputation as the reigning two-time MVP, with Wembanyama posing a formidable challenge for the title of “best player in the world.”

Whichever team emerges victorious from this battle will likely be the favorite heading into the NBA Finals, and more importantly, could set the tone as the league’s dominant force for years to come. As two prospective dynasties face off in their inaugural postseason showdown, here’s a closer look at the dynamics:

Game 1 prediction

Even if you’re leaning towards the Thunder for the series win, the Spurs showcase several strengths as they head into Game 1. Their commanding 4-1 advantage in the regular season series indicates that the Thunder have yet to find effective strategies against them. Jalen Williams is set to return after a hamstring injury in the first round, but his performance remains uncertain. The level of competition is about to rise significantly. While the Timberwolves did challenge the Spurs in the previous round, San Antonio appears to be better mentally prepared for the intensity of the playoffs.

The Thunder’s offensive strategy heavily relies on Gilgeous-Alexander’s ability to drive to the basket, a tactic Wembanyama is particularly skilled at countering. Although the Thunder have potential adjustments, such as employing five-out lineups, no team has yet cracked the code to San Antonio’s unique style. It seems likely that Oklahoma City will need a few games to devise an effective approach. While the Thunder may ultimately claim the series, the prediction for Game 1 favors the Spurs with a +6.5 advantage. The Pick: Spurs +6.5

So much of Oklahoma City’s offense depends on Gilgeous-Alexander’s rim pressure. Wembanyama neutralizes a lot of it. The Thunder have potential solutions, most notably the potential for true five-out lineups, but nobody has yet solved San Antonio’s alien, and my suspicion is that it takes a few games of trial and error to land on a workable answer. The Thunder may win this series, but I’m taking the points and going with the Spurs in Game 1. The Pick: Spurs +6.5
