Unai Emery challenged Aston Villa to become record-breakers after they swept Luton aside to secure a 12th straight home win in the Premier League.

Not since 1983 – when they won 13 in a row at Villa Park – have Villa produced such a good sequence at home.

They now have 20 Premier League wins in the calendar year, which they bettered only in 1998, and are four points shy of leaders Tottenham.

‘Our challenge is to keep winning at home and do something special with our fans,’ said Emery.

‘Maybe the key moment was when we lost consecutive games to Leicester and Arsenal at Villa Park last season.

‘We were conceding goals and not controlling games. I was pushing the players and being very demanding about the structure we were trying to create.

‘After that we found a really good rhythm.

‘It was not easy when our fans were trying to understand what we were trying to create.

‘Now everyone can understand what we are trying to do and we are seeing the consequences.

‘But we have a lot to improve. We are trying to play with emotion and feeling. It is not just about tactics and playing style.’

Villa should have led by more at half-time than the single goal from John McGinn, and they pressed home their dominance before the hour mark.

Moussa Diaby scored the second and the third was an own-goal from Tom Lockyer. Luton’s sole reply was another own-goal, this time from Emiliano Martinez.

Luton boss Rob Edwards said: ‘Games like these will not define our season.

‘Newcastle got into the top four last season and Villa look as though they are at that level. They are an excellent team.’
