A significant factory fire on Sydney’s Northern Beaches has been successfully contained by fire crews.

The blaze, which erupted at a surfboard factory in Brookvale, sent thick black smoke soaring into the sky for several hours on Sunday afternoon. Dozens of firefighters worked tirelessly to bring it under control.

Firefighters received the emergency call shortly before 5:30 p.m. AEDT, mobilizing around 40 firefighters and dispatching a dozen fire trucks to the location on Orchard Road.

“We are currently taking defensive positions to extinguish the fire from the exterior,” said Superintendent Adam Dewberry of Fire and Rescue NSW, shortly after crews arrived at the scene.

“This facility is known for manufacturing surfboards, which involve a high fuel load due to the various products, resins, and foams used in their construction,” he added.

While no serious injuries have been reported, paramedics did attend to a teenage boy who suffered minor burns to his hand.

Police and the NSW energy authority were also supporting the firefighters.

Emergency services began wrapping up at the site about 7.30pm.
