Apple could let you pick a favorite AI model in iOS 27

Apple is gearing up to offer users a new level of customization in its upcoming operating system updates, potentially allowing them to select their preferred artificial intelligence (AI) model to power Apple Intelligence. Renowned tech journalist Mark Gurman from Bloomberg reports that this feature could debut in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, all slated for release this fall. These updates will enable third-party chatbots to integrate into the system, broadening the scope of Siri and other AI-driven features like Writing Tools and Image Playground through what are known as “Extensions.”

Gurman highlights that users will have the flexibility to assign different voices to different AI models used by Siri. For instance, Siri powered by an Apple AI model might have one voice, while an iteration of Siri using ChatGPT could present a distinct voice.

Apple plans to offer users the ability to select from various AI model providers that participate by incorporating support via their App Store applications. Once a compatible AI app is downloaded, users can designate it as their preferred AI through the Settings app. According to Gurman, Apple is already testing collaborations with AI models from Google and Anthropic internally. While Google’s AI models are set to underpin the upcoming overhaul of Siri, ChatGPT remains the sole third-party AI integrated into Apple Intelligence for now, though this is likely to change soon.
