Google’s AI search is so broken it can ‘disregard’ what you’re looking for

Google’s AI Overviews are currently experiencing an intriguing glitch. On Friday morning, users who searched for the term “disregard” found that the AI Overview provided a response typical of a conversational AI chatbot, rather than the usual AI summary, as observed on social media platform X. The AI’s response humorously stated, “Got it. If you need anything else or have a new question later, just let me know!”

By Friday afternoon, however, Google appeared to have removed the AI Overview for the word “disregard” altogether, instead prioritizing a list of related news articles. Google has not yet responded to our inquiries for comment. Nevertheless, a spokesperson told Android Authority that they are aware of the AI’s misinterpretation of certain action-oriented queries and are actively working on a solution that will be implemented soon.

It seems that the issue extends beyond just the term “disregard.” When searching for “ignore,” a colleague from Verge received another unexpected message in the AI Overview section. Similarly, searching the term “skip” yielded a peculiar response.

As of Friday afternoon, the AI Overviews for “ignore” and “skip” continued to produce these erroneous responses. These humorous mishaps are likely just a technical glitch, and it is anticipated that Google will rectify the issue promptly. Perhaps the Google Search team is experiencing a bit of fatigue following the recent Google I/O event.

When they searched “skip,” the AI Overview section said:

It looks like your message was just a test or a typo! Feel free to ask a question, share a prompt, or let me know how I can help you with your tasks today. I’m ready whenever you are!

As of Friday afternoon, Google is still showing me AI Overviews with broken responses when I search for “ignore” and “skip.”

As funny as this all is, it’s almost certainly just some kind of bug — I expect Google will fix it soon enough. Maybe Google Search itself is tired after everything that happened at Google I/O.

Updates, May 22nd: Google now isn’t showing AI Overviews for “disregard.” Also added a Google statement.
