Chicago anti-ICE protesters block vehicles, get hit with tear gas and pepper balls

Federal law enforcement officials used pepper balls and tear gas on Friday in a standoff with protesters opposing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) near Chicago.

This confrontation occurs just two days after a shooting at an ICE facility in Dallas, Texas, where a shooter killed a detainee and injured two others before committing suicide, according to authorities.

Approximately 50 demonstrators gathered midday Friday at an ICE processing location in Broadview, Illinois, which is a suburb of Chicago. An ICE representative informed Fox News that two individuals were arrested, one of whom possessed a firearm.

Footage showed federal law enforcement trying to disperse the protesters from the location. The demonstrators were also observed attempting to hinder vehicles from departing.

“This ICE operation aims at targeting criminal illegal immigrants who have moved to Chicago and Illinois because they believe Governor J.B. Pritzker’s sanctuary policies offer protection, allowing them to freely roam American streets,” the Department of Homeland Security stated earlier this month.

The crowds protesting Friday are in opposition to the transfer of ICE detainees to out-of-state holding centers, according to Fox 32 Chicago.

Homeland Security wrote on X following the Dallas shooting that, “Sanctuary politicians have demonized federal law enforcement as the enemy — placing a target squarely on the backs of the brave men and women of ICE.”

“Hateful anti-ICE rhetoric costs lives. Stop now, before these lies damage more innocent people,” it added.
