A woman in California was hit by a small aircraft that crash-landed in a Long Beach park during an emergency landing attempt, officials confirmed.

The incident unfolded around 4 p.m. on Tuesday at Heartwell Park’s soccer field, according to the Long Beach Fire Department’s Facebook post.

“Upon arrival, emergency units discovered a small plane on its belly, with damaged landing gear. Despite the crash, the fuselage remained intact. Unfortunately, the plane struck a pedestrian in the park as it landed,” the department stated.

The woman, in her 40s, was injured when the aircraft descended onto the soccer field.

Emergency responders assisted in extracting the pilot, identified as an elderly man, from the plane.

Both the pilot and the woman were taken to a hospital, where they were reported to be in moderate but stable condition.

Preliminary information indicates the plane was headed back to Compton after a stop in French Valley when it went down, the fire department said.

The pilot of the “possibly experimental aircraft” may have been attempting to make it to Long Beach Airport for an emergency landing, about a mile and a half from where the plane crashed, KTLA reported.
