They're not finished: Lawmakers extend 2025 legislative session

State lawmakers in Tallahassee, Florida, decided to extend their legislative session until June 6, just before midnight on May 2, 2025.

The session was supposed to end Friday, May 2, but the House and Senate have not reached a deal on a budget plan.

Lawmakers will take the next week off to be back home in their districts, and then the budget conference will begin the week of May 12.

Senate President Ben Albritton from Waucula informed 8 On Your Side, “There’s no doubt we need to continue our work. I’m happy to announce that we’ve established a framework for the budget and a preliminary schedule to proceed. Floridians anticipate and deserve a balanced budget that cuts down state spending, decreases spending per person, and reduces the growth of state bureaucracy.

As mentioned yesterday, you are welcome to return to your home districts and spend time with your families next week. Cherish these moments together. During this period, we aim to finalize our work on budget allocations with the House. We plan to start the budget conference the week following Mother’s Day Weekend, on May 12th. I realize some Senators may have prior commitments away from Tallahassee during this period. Once we finalize the allocations, we will release a more detailed schedule. Thank you for your understanding and patience.”
