Fights among unsupervised teens at Brunswick’s “First Friday” events prompt police to increase presence next month.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. — Fights involving young people at the City of Brunswick’s “First Friday” event caused a response from the chief of police Saturday.

In a post on social media, Chief Angela Smith said unsupervised teenagers were fighting and running through crowds, causing a commotion.

“This behavior will not be tolerated! Parents and guardians, we urge you to supervise your children and discuss with them how they should act in public spaces,” Smith stated.

Smith added that there will be additional police presence to “deter such behavior” at the next First Friday event.

Smith’s full statement:

“This First Friday downtown, and the First Friday in April, we observed an increase in unsupervised youth. On both occasions, several teenagers began fighting and caused a disturbance by running through crowds. This behavior will not be tolerated! We ask parents and guardians to supervise your children and talk with them about their behavior in public spaces. The First Friday event, like many others, is aimed at being a family-friendly environment where the public can gather and enjoy the community we all call home. As a preventive measure, the next First Friday will have an increased law enforcement presence to prevent such behavior. Our community will be a safe place for residents, visitors, and everyone to enjoy!”
