Rite Aid customer deadline for returns, rewards 'approaching fast' amid bankruptcy

(WHTM) — Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday is alerting Rite Aid customers that the time to use their gift cards, coupons, or rewards is quickly running out as the retailer is filing for bankruptcy.

Sunday has stated that consumers have until June 6 to utilize their Rite Aid gift cards, coupons, or rewards. The stores will no longer accept returns or exchanges after June 4.

“I strongly advise Rite Aid customers to complete any returns, exchanges, and redeem their gift cards and rewards points immediately,” Sunday emphasized. “These deadlines are fast approaching, and both points and gift card balances will soon lose their value.”

Rite Aid filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey on May 5.

Sunday said that after June 6, Rite Aid gift cards will no longer be accepted and will have no remaining value.

Rite Aid customers can expect their local store to close or change ownership in the next few months, as the struggling drugstore chain goes through another bankruptcy filing.

The Philadelphia-based company had been closing stores and struggling with losses for years before its first bankruptcy filing in 2023. The company says its “only viable path forward” is a return to Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings.

The company plans to sell customer prescription files, inventory and other assets as it closes distribution centers and unloads store locations. Stores will remain open for now, but the company isn’t buying new inventory, so bare shelves are likely to become more common.

The company runs 1,245 stores in 15 states, according to its website. It has a heavy presence in New York, Pennsylvania and California, which alone has 347 locations.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
