Trump reinstates, expands travel ban: Which countries are affected?

President Donald Trump has issued a proclamation on Wednesday that restricts entry into the United States for individuals from 12 countries and imposes additional travel limitations on people from another seven countries.

The president cited national security concerns in announcing the ban, which officially takes effect at 12:01 a.m. on Monday.

This proclamation, reminiscent of the travel ban from Trump’s earlier tenure, allows exceptions for nationals from these 19 countries who are lawful permanent U.S. residents, current visa holders, and individuals whose entry is deemed to benefit U.S. national interests.

In a video posted online, Trump said that additional countries could be added to the list if new international threats arise at a later point.

“The list can be updated if significant improvements occur,” the president stated. “Similarly, new countries might be added if there are emerging threats worldwide. We will not permit entry to those who intend harm, ensuring America’s safety remains paramount.”

Here are the countries affected by the new proclamation:

12 countries banned:

  • Afghanistan
  • Burma
  • Chad
  • Republic of the Congo
  • Equatorial Guinea
  • Eritrea
  • Haiti
  • Iran
  • Libya
  • Somalia
  • Sudan
  • Yemen

7 countries restricted:

  • Burundi
  • Cuba
  • Laos
