The Illinois Department of Public Health has announced the addition of 180 new ZIP codes to the list of areas with high-risk exposure, covering segments of 47 counties across Illinois.
Under Illinois law, any child living in a high-risk ZIP code will be automatically tested twice by their second birthday.
Children under six are required to be assessed for lead exposure through a questionnaire by a health care provider.
“There is no acceptable level of lead in the bloodstream. Early detection and proactive steps are essential to safeguard the health and development of children in Illinois from the severe effects of lead exposure,” stated IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra.
