Christina Formella, a former Downers Grove South High School special education teacher, faces 52 additional charges in a teacher abuse case.

The Formella Indictment, announced on June 17, 2025, includes 20 counts of Criminal Sexual Assault and 20 counts of Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse.

Formella, age 30, is accused of abusing a 15-year-old student starting in January 2023. The case came to light when the victim’s mother uncovered explicit messages. Authorities are actively investigating this unsettling case of teacher misconduct.

Initial Charges and Arrest

Having worked as a special education teacher and soccer coach since the 2020-21 school year, Formella was arrested on March 16, 2025, during a traffic stop in Downers Grove.

On March 15, 2025, the victim’s mother reported finding explicit text messages on her son’s phone to the Downers Grove Police, revealing an alleged sexual relationship between Formella and the 15-year-old student.

Formella faced initial charges of one count of Criminal Sexual Assault and two counts of Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse.

On March 17, 2025, the court rejected the State’s motion to detain her pretrial, releasing her with conditions that barred entry to Downers Grove South High School and contact with anyone under 18. Formella resigned and surrendered her teaching license soon after.

“The allegations against Ms. Formella are extremely disturbing,” Berlin said. “It is alleged that she used her position of trust and authority as a tutor and a coach to sexually assault a minor student. The type of abuse and behavior alleged in this case will not be tolerated.” — [People]

Expanded Allegations

On April 17, 2025, the victim disclosed further school assault details during interviews at the DuPage County Children’s Advocacy Center, deepening the teacher abuse case.

Prosecutors allege Formella groomed the victim from age 14, engaging in sexual acts approximately 50 times, including 45 incidents at school.

The abuse allegedly spanned January 2023 to September 2024. Formella denied the allegations, claiming the victim sent the texts to himself to blackmail her.

On April 17, 2025, the victim and his parents went to the DuPage County Children’s Advocacy Center for interviews during which the victim disclosed additional sexual abuse, allegedly committed by Formella. Evidence and Denials

Investigators discovered a “memoir” in Formella’s Notes app, where she expressed anger at the victim for “cheating” and described him as “disgusting.”

The document included a “Manifestations” section, predicting the victim would seek to reconcile with her. Formella claimed these writings addressed her husband and served as an anxiety outlet, not evidence of a student relationship.

She also alleged the victim, a “stalker,” took her phone to send incriminating texts to himself, a claim her husband reportedly denied knowing about.

Prosecutors presented hundreds of grooming texts from the victim’s phone, including one stating, “I love you sooooo much baby…,” arguing these texts demonstrate Formella’s intent and manipulation over two years.

Public Reaction

The Formella Indictment sparked intense public outrage. New York Post reporters confronted Formella outside court on June 17, 2025, pressing her with questions:

“Christina, what happened with the kid? Did you really sexually assault him 50 times?” They also challenged her husband, asking, “Michael, why are you still with her?”

Formella remained silent, but the intense scrutiny underscored the community’s shock and demand for answers in this high-profile teacher abuse case.

Legal Proceedings

Formella pleaded not guilty to all 55 charges, including 20 counts of Criminal Sexual Assault (Class 1 Felony), 20 counts of Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse (Class 1 Felony), six counts of Indecent Solicitation of a Child (Class 3 Felony), and six counts of Grooming (Class 4 Felony).

On June 17, 2025, Judge Mia McPherson rejected the State’s second petition to detain Formella pretrial, citing her compliance with initial release conditions, but ordered electronic monitoring to ensure public safety.

Prosecutors, led by Assistant State’s Attorneys Jaclyn McAndrew and Michael Fisher, highlighted the case’s severity, pointing to the alleged two-year abuse timeline and extensive evidence, including texts and Formella’s writings.

The defense has not disclosed its strategy, but Formella’s plea suggests a challenge to the evidence’s credibility.

If convicted, Formella faces up to 60 years in prison. Her next court appearance is August 4, 2025, before Judge McPherson. The public must note that Formella remains presumed innocent, with the government required to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Community Impact

The allegations devastated the Downers Grove South High School community, eroding trust in a respected educator. Parents expressed profound dismay, raising concerns about student safety and school oversight.

Principal Arwen Lyp, in an email to parents, stated, “We are devastated, and our community is reeling.”

The Formella Indictment emphasizes the critical need to shield American students from abuse by authority figures. It has spurred demands for stronger safeguards and accountability in schools to prevent future breaches.
