Mets draft Mitch Voit, who went viral for cocaine-snorting celebration

Mitch Voit made a name for himself long before his first-round MLB draft selection by the Mets on Sunday night — but not for the best reason.

In March, Voit gained widespread attention while playing for Michigan after hitting a bases-clearing triple against USC. His celebration, which involved mimicking the act of snorting cocaine by pretending to snort the third-base line chalk, quickly went viral.

The 20-year-old later issued an apology.

On March 17, Voit addressed the incident by posting an apology on X: “I want to apologize for my actions on third base yesterday. I made an immature decision in the heat of the moment. The gesture I made does not represent my character, the values of the household I grew up in, or the block M that I stand for in any way. I take full responsibility for my actions, and I am sincerely sorry to all those affected negatively by this.”

Now, the pitcher-turned-second-baseman joins the Mets’ system as the 38th pick in the 2025 draft.

He last pitched in 2024, and after internal brace surgery on his right elbow in spring 2024, he focused solely on hitting this past season.

He posted a .346 batting average with 14 home runs and a 1.140 OPS across 56 games in 2025.

During a Zoom call with reporters on Sunday, Voit characterized himself as a “winner” who is willing to do whatever it takes for team victory. Interestingly, during this session, the viral celebration was not a topic of discussion.

Voit also made some history for the Wolverines with his selection in the draft, as Michigan became the first school ever to have a first-round selection in each of the same year’s NBA, NFL, NHL and MLB drafts.

While it’ll be some time before Mets fans see Voit in the big leagues, if ever, he immediately becomes an intriguing name amongst New York’s farm system.

“They’re winners,” he said of the Mets, “and I think I fit real good in with that kind of program and organization.”
