NEW YORK — A mysterious death on an African hunting trip leads to the investigation of a wealthy dentist in the new docuseries “Trophy Wife: Murder on Safari.”

Director Dani Sloane discussed the process of creating this series and their approach to unveiling the true events surrounding the death of Larry Rudolph’s wife, Bianca.

Sloane said a three-part docuseries was the perfect way to highlight this dramatic story.

“I think this sort of concept around episode one being very rooted in dental world, episode two being very rooted in the Safari Club World and big game hunting, and episode three being very rooted in the investigation kind of emerged out of honestly, just the way the story progressed,” she explained.

The series points out alleged bad business practices involving Larry Rudolph’s dental group that crossed over into his personal life. He had a long-running affair with his dental hygienist, Lori Milliron.

“I mean, there it was an open secret, right? Like you have all these dental assistants she was in the office, they sort of made half an attempt to hide their relationship, but everyone who was around them, you know, sort of knew, and there was a brazenness to the way that they kind of went about their lives all the way through till the end,” Sloane said.

Shockingly there are photos and videos that highlight their affair and expand upon the story in the Rolling Stone article “Before the Dentist Knows You’re Dead” by Matt Sullivan.

The dedicated production team, including Sloane, traveled to Zambia to see where Bianca died. The Rudolph’s had been there to hunt big game, yet she was found dead from a gunshot wound in their safari cabin.

“But it was so important just to be there. And I mean, even just being on, you know, safari and filming the animals, as we did, you just got a sense of, like, how remote this place was. And it definitely for me, I think, and you know, the team that I was with made us feel more connected to the story, because there is something about just being there and seeing it, seeing the leopard in the tree, seeing, you know, the environment and just how remote it was,” Sloane said.

Larry Rudolph was a man that would go big and bold in every aspect of life, no matter what the cost. Sloane wanted to explore how that eventually led to his downfall.

“I mean, you see the timestamp in episode three, is three months after Bianca’s death, were in Arizona, and they’re building their lives together. So, they’re really, there’s such a boldness. And I think that’s kind of the theme with Larry Rudolph, is that he just it’s never enough, and there really are not ramifications for the way he lives his life, until, of course, ultimately, there potentially are,” she said.

The series features exclusive interviews with Larry Rudolph and Lori Milliron from federal prison, and new interviews with Rudolph’s former business partner, Milliron’s daughter, the Rudolph’s son, the Rudolphs’ insurance broker, FBI agents close to the case, and the former U.S. ambassador to Zambia among others.

Sloane hopes viewers will listen to their viewpoints and at the end of three episodes, have a lot to talk about.

“It has a heart, it has, you know, a bigger message and that they can kind of take something from it, that feels like it, it resonates,” she said.

All three episodes of “Trophy Wife: Murder on Safari” are streaming now on Hulu.
