Mark Hamill, Garrett Wareing and more share their take on the film’s powerful blend of brotherhood, horror, and life’s journey.

SAN DIEGO — Star Wars” legend Mark Hamill is stepping into darker territory in his latest role, and he’s not shy about it.

During a conversation with George Pennacchio from On The Red Carpet at San Diego Comic-Con, Hamill delved into “The Long Walk,” a fresh film adaptation of Stephen King’s eerie dystopian novel from 1979. “The concept is both horrific and unsettling,” Hamill remarked. “However, the true heart lies in the journey of these young men and what they endure along the way.”

In a bleak, future America, “The Long Walk” follows a harsh national contest where 50 teenage boys are forced to walk continually without stopping. Falling below three miles per hour means they’re out—permanently. The last boy remaining earns the prize of his choice.

Hamill takes on the role of a sinister character in the movie, a role he thoroughly enjoys. “I’m just a bad ass,” he commented with a smile. “If I do my job well, everyone will absolutely despise me, and that’s perfectly fine,” he added.

Co-star Garrett Wareing warned the audience about the emotional weight of the story. “It’s freaky-gets me in my gut every time,” he said. “That feeling doesn’t leave you.”

Actor Tut Nyuot said the film struck a personal chord. “One thing that touched me is that it can speak to everybody… the journey of life,” he said. “The heart of the story is brotherhood and friendship.”

“The Long Walk” heads to theaters on September 12.
