CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) – Illinois running back Aidan Laughery delivered his top performance in college to date during the Illini’s last game of the 2024 regular season against Northwestern.

The Gibson City native ran for 172 yards on 14.3 yards per carry and found the end zone three times.

Now, entering his junior year, Laughery is hoping to carry the momentum from his late sophomore breakout.

“The experiences you go through stay with you every day, shaping you,” Laughery reflected. “Failures and successes aren’t easily forgotten. Failure stings more, and it’s been a huge motivational force for me. I know what failure feels like and am aware of the preparation needed to be ready, and that keeps pushing me forward daily.”

He led all Illinois running backs with 6.1 yards per carry as the Illini notched their first 10-win season since 2001.

“He possesses the right qualities,” said Illinois running backs coach Thad Ward. “In my three years with him, I’ve seen that he understands what’s required and is confident in his abilities. I’m confident he’ll have an outstanding season this year.”

Laughery describes Ward’s coaching style as energetic, intense and fun.

Laughery, who graduated from GCMS, is joined by another local talent in the Illinois running back lineup. Both Laughery and Ward are eagerly anticipating the return of Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond graduate Kaden Feagin, who aims to be fully fit for the 2025 season.
