Pope Leo opts to share papal residence with four associates, breaking with tradition

Pope Leo XIV is introducing changes at the Vatican by choosing to stay in a newly revamped papal apartment with four roommates, as reported.

This decision signifies a departure from tradition, as Leo will share the residence undergoing extensive renovations. This move marks a historic first in modern times for a pope to live communally within the Vatican palace’s designated quarters, according to The Telegraph.

“This seems unprecedented to me,” Vatican correspondent Iacopo Scaramuzzi conveyed to the UK publication. “It’s unclear if this has historical precedence in the Church’s extensive past, but it is certainly unique in the contemporary era.”

Joining him is his personal secretary from Peru, Father Edgard Rimaycuna, who often accompanies Leo. Known for being a trusted adviser and a close confidant since Leo’s early ministry days in South America, Father Edgard is considered one of Leo’s most devoted allies.

This isn’t Leo XIV’s first instance of embracing a modern approach. He was born to a modest, immigrant family in Chicago before entering the priesthood.

In 2024, he told Vatican News that he strives to stay grounded.

“A bishop is not meant to be a little prince ruling over a kingdom; he must genuinely embrace humility, connect with those he serves, and walk alongside them, sharing in their joys and sufferings,” he expressed.

Reaction to Leo’s move has been mixed online. Earlier this year, author James Martin wrote on X: “We need to trust Pope Leo’s discernment in this and all things — and wish him well in his new digs!”
