Denied: Federal Judge Refuses to Drop Charges Against Milwaukee Judge Who Thwarted ICE

You might recall Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan, who made headlines for attempting to shield an undocumented immigrant within her courthouse and facilitating his escape through a side exit when ICE agents appeared to apprehend him. Unfortunately for her, surveillance footage captured the act, leading to a federal grand jury indicting her in May on two charges. These charges carry potential penalties of up to six years in prison and a maximum fine of $350,000. Subsequently, the Wisconsin Supreme Court temporarily suspended her from her judicial duties pending the outcome of the case.

Her defense messaging has been ludicrous, as she’s claimed she had some sort of magic judicial immunity for her “official acts.”

On Tuesday, the news just got worse for Dugan as a U.S. District Judge rejected her motion for dismissal:

On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Lynne Adelman denied Dugan’s request to dismiss the case. A magistrate judge had previously recommended proceeding with the case in July. Judge Adelman’s ruling leaves room for an appeal to the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Dugan’s attorneys have yet to issue a statement regarding the decision.

Dugan has pleaded not guilty to helping the man in the country illegally try to evade authorities. No trial date has been set…

This case underscores the tensions between former President Donald Trump’s administration and local governments concerning the contentious immigration enforcement policies introduced by the Republican leadership.
