Several dozen Indiana lawmakers attended a four-hour meeting with officials from the Trump administration on Tuesday afternoon, as confirmed by ABC7.

ABC7 is told that most of that time was spent discussing policy, including Medicare, Medicaid, immigration, and other issues.

And at the end, with Vice President JD Vance in the room, there was a discussion about redrawing Indiana’s congressional map.

The Republican Party currently holds seven out of Indiana’s nine House seats, leaving room to potentially gain two more. An Indiana state representative who participated in the meeting said such an effort is worthwhile.

“As someone who believes in my party’s vision, I think it is essential to utilize every resource available to advance our agenda. We cannot accomplish this if we lose control of the House,” stated State Rep. Craig Haggard, a Republican from Central Indiana.

Meanwhile, Democrats and their allies convened outside the Indiana Statehouse on Tuesday to express their opposition to the potential redistricting effort. Such a move would necessitate a special session, expected to occur in the fall.

“This attempt to strip power from the people doesn’t align with who we are. It’s not representative of democracy, nor is it what the residents of our state desire,” said State Rep. Mike Andrade, a Democrat from Northwest Indiana.

The meeting at the White House follows closely on the heels of new legislation passed by Texas lawmakers, which could enable Republicans to gain five seats. Concurrently, California is set to present a new map to voters that could result in Democrats gaining an additional five seats.

And back in Illinois, Gov. JB Pritzker has said redistricting is also on the table.
