An investigation has commenced after a California inmate convicted of murder was accused of attempting to kill a prison psychiatrist during a private meeting.

On August 29, Jose L. Ramirez, 35, allegedly assaulted a psychiatrist at the California Medical Facility, a state prison in Vacaville, as reported by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR).

Officials said a correctional officer quickly intervened to stop the attack. An improvised weapon was found at the scene.

The psychiatrist was hospitalized for treatment and is expected to recover, according to officials. Following the incident, Ramirez was placed in restricted housing while the investigation continues.

Ramirez had been transferred from Los Angeles County on December 9, 2019. He is serving a life sentence with parole eligibility for first-degree murder, which includes firearm use, felony arson, and additional enhancements.

The case will be referred to the Solano County District Attorney’s Office for possible felony prosecution.

The California Medical Facility caters to the medical, psychiatric, and dental health needs of male inmates within the CDCR. Most inmate-patients at CMF live in an outpatient setting and receive care in outpatient clinics.
