The Barclays banking app is down leaving customers unable to withdraw money or make payments.

According to Down Detector, more than 600 people have reported online outages for both payments and refunds.

Card, contactless and bank transfers are impacted by the outages, which were first reported at around 8.30am on Saturday.

One user of Down Detector wrote: ‘Surprise, surprise, Barclays online banking is down again…..this is not the first time, nor will it be the last.

‘I do not understand how a bank of such size and calibre is allowed to have such a useless online banking system.’

Another person added: ‘Barclays needs to fix this. People don’t have time for these issues; online banking is supposed to be the easiest way to manage your finances.’

While a third said: ‘My app says I have no bank cards?

‘Just tried to pay for something at Tescos and my card is not only not working, but my app says it doesn’t exist! What’s happening?’

A Barclays spokesperson commented: “Earlier today, some customers experienced difficulties accessing the Barclays Online Banking website or viewing their cards in the Barclays App, due to a temporary service interruption.

‘This issue has been resolved. Customers can check the current status of all Barclays services at: https://status.uk.barclays/.’

Barclays customers took to social media to vent their frustration while the bank’s app was down.

One wrote: ‘Barclays being down again & can’t pay for any food or withdraw cash.. absolute joke, can’t even buy my son’s food.’

Another said: ‘Barclays why are you giving me this inaccurate error code when it is you that is down. My details are correct.

‘It’s misleading and inconvenient for those who can’t afford to spend their time figuring out ‘your’ status when they simply want to access their money.’

A third angry customer wrote: ‘Surprise surprise Barclays is down AGAIN.

‘I can’t access MY MONEY can’t transfer MY MONEY withdraw MY MONEY or make payments with MY MONEY nothing.

‘Think it’s time to change banks as this is becoming a way to frequent thing absolutely hocking.’

While a fourth wrote: ”Is Barclays bank down again?

‘Tried to get money out and also pay with my card and it won’t let me get my money.

‘Trying to pay for my Daughter’s 40th birthday party tonight and unable to access my own cash.

‘Not good enough. This happened in February too when we were going away!’

Another customer replied by saying ‘mines been declined in the supermarket despite ample funds’.

Meanwhile, someone else wrote: ‘Is Barclays still down? My card still isn’t working.’

Barclays’ online banking services serve over 10 million users nationwide, with roughly one-third relying solely on mobile services for their financial management.

The Daily Mail has approached Barclays for comment.

Earlier this year, Barclays was required to pay £12.5 million in compensation to customers after IT disruptions in January and February prevented millions from using mobile and online banking services.

Earlier this year, Barclays was required to pay £12.5 million in compensation to customers after IT disruptions in January and February prevented millions from using mobile and online banking services.

The costs are estimated to be between £5million and £7.5million to cover the ‘inconvenience or distress’ caused by the January and February outages this year.

The bank was also ordered to pay additional £5million for other outages that stretch from January 2023 to February 2025, according to The London Economic.

The previous Barclays outage lasted three days between January 31 and February 2, leaving customers unable to access funds or make payments on what was payday for many and the deadline for HMRC self-assessment tax returns – sparking fears the outage was the result of a cyber attack.

The bank said at the time the problem was due to a ‘technology issue’ rather than a cyber attack and that it was ‘very sorry for any disruption’.

In an enquiry by MPs, the bank confirmed 56 per cent of online payments during the outage failed due to ‘severe degradation’ of its IT systems.

The Treasury Committee, which scrutinises financial institutions found nine of the UK’s biggest banks suffered outages lasting 803 hours over the last two years, amounting to more than a month’s worth of failures.

At least 158 banking IT failure incidents affected millions of customers’ ability to access and use banking services between January 2023 and February 2025.
