Jeremiah Brown, sibling to Charlotte murder suspect Decarlos Brown Jr., has criticized the judicial system for allowing his brother to remain free despite his violent history.
In August, Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska was viciously and indiscriminately attacked while on the light rail train in Charlotte, North Carolina. The accused, Decarlos Brown Jr., aged 34, has a past marked by violent offenses and has been a repeat offender. Jeremiah Brown, 19, shared with the New York Post his belief that his brother should face the full consequences of the law, placing blame on the justice system for his brother’s release.
“I think they could have pretty much prevented it then,” Jeremiah said, referring to his brother being released from prison this past January.
“I wasn’t even aware he had mental health issues … You can’t just allow him to walk free, especially due to mental problems,” Jeremiah commented. “He might commit another crime. While he needs mental health treatment, there must be ramifications for his actions. I believe he should face the consequences.”
Jeremiah said he had only met his brother, with whom he shares a father, “once or twice.”
“He was on my father’s side. They have a record of being in jail and stuff,” he said.
Jeremiah expressed sympathy for Zarutska’s family and hopes they get the support they need.
