A promising young cheerleader lost her life in a freak accident at a backyard party when a reveler threw gasoline on a bonfire as she walked past. 

Madison Lewis, 17, was severely burned across her entire body when the horror unfolded at a party in Jack, Texas on December 16, 2023. 

She was rushed to the hospital and put into a medically-induced coma, battling for her life for three weeks before sadly passing away from her injuries.

This week, 24-year-old Sebastian Lindsey, the man responsible for throwing the gasoline, admitted guilt to negligent homicide after acknowledging he accidentally caused the death of the Jacksboro High School cheerleader.

Lindsey entered an open plea, meaning he confessed without a deal from the prosecution. Under Texas law, he could be sentenced to a maximum of 10 years in prison and fines reaching up to $10,000.

It remains uncertain when a judge will deliver Lindsey’s sentence for Lewis’s death, a case that drew national attention two years ago as she struggled for nearly a month before ultimately losing her battle.

Sebastian Lindsey, 24, pleaded guilty to negligent homicide this week as he admitted to throwing the gasoline on the fire that caused Lewis’s death 

The horror unfolded at a party held in the backyard of a home in Jack, Texas, where a small fire was burning in a metal barrel. 

Witnesses reported that shortly after midnight, Lindsey aimed to intensify the fire. However, when he tossed gasoline onto the flames, it tragically ignited Lewis’s hair and clothes.

The cheerleader suffered severe burns across more than 85 percent of her body, but partygoers were too afraid to call 911 because there was alcohol involved, so they drove her to the hospital. 

Lewis was then airlifted to another hospital as medics raced to treat her for severe burns across most of her body, and she was placed in a medically-induced coma. 

The 17-year-old underwent a number of emergency surgeries including skin grafts and skin regrowth processes, and doctors said that they expected she would be in hospital for at least a year. 

According to a Facebook page set up at the time that she was still in hospital, Lewis was also suffering from fluid retention in her lungs. 

The page said that the tragedy came a year after the death of her sister in a car accident. 

Her mother Ericca Hammond told KDFW at the time: ‘There’s nothing in the world more that I want and need than for my baby girl to be okay and to live a life.’

The teen fought for her life in hospital for almost a month before she passed away on January 7, 2024. 

In a post to the Facebook tribute page on the day Lewis passed away, her mother’s friend wrote: ‘Madison put up one hell of a fight, but her precious body was so tired.’ 

‘The good lord called her home this morning at 1:41am, surrounded by family,’ they wrote. 

Lindsey was charged with manslaughter following the incident, and this week he made an open plea without any deal in place with prosecutors. 

His fate will be decided by a judge at a later date. 

Tributes poured in for Lewis following her tragic death, with friend Zena Martin writing on her Facebook group page: ‘I still feel like I’m caught in a nightmare and I’m just waiting to wake up.’ 

‘I miss putting my face all crazy in the camera when you would call,’ she wrote. 

‘(We’d) hear you laughing like crazy and yelling I love you from across the room, we miss you like crazy.’
