BMW is recalling more than 145,000 vehicles due to starter motor overheating risk, potentially causing engine fires.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration has announced that BMW is recalling over 145,000 vehicles due to the potential failure and overheating of the starter motor, which could heighten the risk of fire.

“An overheated starter motor can ignite nearby combustible material in the engine compartment, increasing risk of a fire,” the NHTSA says.

The recall affects the following models:

  • 2020 340I
  • 2020-2022 740LI
  • 2020-2025 840I
  • 2019-2020 X5
  • 2020 X6
  • 2019-2020 X7

According to the NHTSA, dealers will provide engine starter replacements at no cost. Notification letters are anticipated to be dispatched by Nov. 17, 2025. Owners can also reach out to BMW customer service for assistance. Vehicle Identification Numbers included in the recall will be available for search on NHTSA.gov starting Nov. 17.
