The country’s largest police union has criticized reports suggesting that Chicago police officers were instructed not to assist ICE agents surrounded by demonstrators, labeling it “shocking” and against law enforcement’s obligation to help officers in peril.

Leaders from the National Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) and Illinois State FOP were astonished by claims that Chicago’s patrol chief told officers to refrain from aiding U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel as protesters surrounded them on Saturday.

“While specifics are unfolding, it seems Chicago police officers received orders not to aid a group of ICE agents who faced physical threats from what appeared to be an angry crowd,” stated the National FOP President Patrick Yoes in a press statement. “To be clear, both the National FOP and Illinois FOP assert that when an officer requests backup, you respond regardless of the circumstances.”

Yoes alongside Illinois State FOP President Chris Southwood argued that this directive breached the fundamental tenet of law enforcement—officers coming to the aid of fellow officers in danger.

Police confronted participants in a protest outside an immigration processing and detention facility on October 3, 2025, in Broadview, Illinois. This location is frequently targeted by protests as federal agents continue Operation Midway Blitz in the Chicago region, an effort aimed at capturing and deporting undocumented immigrants present in the area.

However, two seasoned Chicago police insiders categorically denied the department’s claims that officers responded to the ICE agents’ calls for assistance when they were cornered by protesters, describing it to Fox News as, in their words, “COVER THEIR A– BULLS–T!!”

One ranking source told Fox News the Chicago Police Department’s statement was “not true,” saying dispatch audio proves it. The source said officers had responded but had to leave because of the order.
