An undocumented immigrant in Indiana has been detained following his alleged involvement in a deadly semi-truck accident, as reported by authorities.

The Portage Police Department revealed that on Wednesday, Broko Stankovic was driving along U.S. Highway 20 in Indiana when traffic halted due to a Ram Sprinter turning near Douglas Drive. Stankovic, however, appeared not to decelerate his semi-truck, according to a FOX 32 report.

Authorities stated that in an attempt to avoid a collision, Stankovic made a sharp left turn into oncoming traffic, where he collided with a Subaru Crosstrek.

The impact caused the semi-truck to jackknife, subsequently colliding with the Ram Sprinter, which was then shoved into a road sign. Tragically, police confirmed that the 54-year-old Subaru driver succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

According to the Portage County Sheriff’s Office, Stankovic was identified as the individual responsible for the crash.

Further investigations revealed that Stankovic was using a suspended Illinois commercial driver’s license (CDL) tied to a family member, rather than possessing a valid CDL of his own. Additionally, officials noted that his employer lacked registration with the Department of Transportation.
